Sustainability is Changing the Face of Beauty

Brick-and-mortar experiences

You don’t have to be an e-commerce business to preach sustainable practises. In fact, physical stores are now basing their entire brand, product and/or service offering around natural, ethical, sustainable alternatives. Brick-and-mortar retail outlets have a role to play in the adoption of sustainable habits. The better and more convenient the experience, the more likely people are to return and spend with environmentally conscious brands, despite the price tag (which is often slightly higher).

ERVA is a nail salon that offers the least toxic nail products and incorporates herbs, essential oils, salt and ointments into treatments.

“Women today are more conscious about what products they are putting in their bodies”

Leila Davoren, Founder of ERVA

By providing an experience that is as luxe, as enjoyable and as convenient as anything else on the market, sustainable stores and salons like ERVA are making eco-friendly shopping sprees a reality.

Health first, beauty second

Healthy on the inside equals healthy, beautiful outside! The beauty category is no longer limited to products that go ON the skin. Beauty products include ingestible powders, gummies, foods and beverages that are designed to improve your internal health and compliment the rest of your routine. This category has started to go mainstream and we’re expecting even bigger things in 2021!

Anti-pollution skincare

Pollution from carbon emissions and green-house gasses are no longer just threatening the health of our planet, these toxins are starting to affect our entire body, including our skin. The multitude of chemicals that we expose to our skin daily, along with the harsh sun, begin to damage the particles of our skin over time- leaving us to age faster and develop more skin-related issues.

Anti-pollution skincare is skincare that protects against the invisible “nasties” floating around in the air every day – most commonly promising to shield your skin from tiny, pollution particles that are usually absorbed. Think of it like an SPF – but for pollution – and in fact, many anti-pollution products are enriched with the extra protective power of SPF to simultaneously guard your skin from harsh UV rays.

Industry giants will make their move

As we head into the “20’s” prepare to see positive changes rolling out across some of the biggest companies in the beauty industry. The health, wellness and sustainability initiatives that have been building up and trickling through over the last few years will suddenly feel like an avalanche. Consumers are demanding change, and these companies have realised they can either get with the times or get left behind.

Out with single use, in with reusable

When it comes to sustainability, we’re always learning. There are SO many single use products in the world that we often don’t realise the effects they have on the planet. Take single use makeup wipes and cotton pads, for example. The sustainable alternatives – reusable remover pads – have only recently come onto the market, and through that process, the shocking statistics around wipes and pads waste have come to light. Expect to see many of the single use items you have grown accustomed to transitioning into a more eco-friendly space.
