What To Gift The Hostess – A Guide

We all know it’s polite to bring a token of appreciation when attending a party, but we often don’t think about it until the last second. We’re left grabbing something we have on hand as we run out the door or stopping on the way to a dinner party, picking a present that’s more about convenience than your host’s personal preferences.

While, of course, a bottle of wine or a box of chocolates are always appreciated, if you want to go above and beyond, we’ve got a few suggestions for unique hostess gifts that will show you really put thought into what you brought.

For the Super Host– Someone who regularly throws dinner parties probably has everything she needs in terms of kitchen tools and crockery, so how about something that adds a touch of luxury to happy hour? Embroidered cocktail napkins are a fun way to add flair to any party, and you can pick from classic to kitschy, depending on your friend’s personality.

For the Beauty Junkie– Buying makeup for someone else is tough and, frankly, probably ill-advised unless you truly know their personal style. However, you can purchase a makeup adjacent gift like a great hand lotion she can display in her bathroom or fun sheet masks.  You could even put together a little gift basket so that your hostess can have a post-party spa night to relax after her dinner party duties.

For the Wine Lover– Admittedly, this seems like a time when buying a bottle of wine would be a great solution, but much like makeup, wine is very personal.  Instead of guessing what wine someone would love, get them a wine accessory like a beautiful bottle stopper.  It’s an unexpected twist on a traditional hostess gift.

For the Artist- A creator always appreciates something that’s handmade-it just doesn’t have to be hand-made by you! Try a woven basket set that could be used in multiple ways to suit their needs or a piece of pottery.

For your Coworker- With so many of us working remotely these days, we may not have an office in the traditional sense.  To help your work wife set up a beautiful workstation no matter where they are, gift them an elegant desk set or personalized stationery!

For your New Friend- For someone you don’t know as well, use this as an opportunity to help them get to know you better and gift them one of your favorite books or movies.  Yes, this is an unusual hostess gift but, if you let them know why you picked that book for them and why you think they might like it, it’s quite thoughtful!

For your Neighbors- If you’re headed to a casual neighborhood potluck, you don’t have to get an extravagant gift. Just bring a little something everyone can share while they’re at the party. Make your signature dessert in a pretty container the hosts can keep and include the story behind the dish and the recipe on a cute card.
